Using a bakhoor burner is simple once you know the steps. This guide covers the traditional charcoal method - the most popular way to enjoy bakhoor at home.
What you will need
- A bakhoor burner (mabkhara)
- Quick-light charcoal
- Tongs
- A lighter or gas flame
- Your favourite bakhoor
Step 1: Light the charcoal
Using tongs, hold a charcoal disc over a flame until it begins to spark and turn orange at the edges. Quick-light charcoal will start to glow within seconds. Once it is evenly lit and lightly covered in grey ash, it is ready.
Step 2: Place the charcoal in the burner
Set the lit charcoal into the centre of your bakhoor burner. Allow it to settle for about a minute until the surface is hot.
Step 3: Add the bakhoor
Place a small piece or pinch of bakhoor directly on top of the hot charcoal. Start with a little - you can always add more. Within moments, fragrant smoke will begin to rise.
Step 4: Scent your space
Gently carry the burner through your home, allowing the smoke to fill each room. Traditionally, the burner is also passed under clothing and through the hair so the fragrance lingers throughout the day. Always move slowly and keep the burner upright.
Step 5: Let it burn out safely
Allow the charcoal to burn out completely in a safe, heat-proof spot, away from children and flammable materials. Never leave a lit burner unattended.
A few tips
- Less is more - a small amount of bakhoor produces plenty of fragrance.
- Prefer a flameless option? An electric bakhoor burner removes the need for charcoal entirely.
